Description

“Winter tree of life” is the winter version of the spiral tree motif, kept in a cold blue range. The curling branches are stitched in pale blue, silver and white beads, and the background looks like frosty sky streaked with rime.

What the picture shows

The composition is vertical: the trunk climbs from below and opens into dozens of tight spirals that fill the whole surface of the canvas. Small signs are scattered along the branches — striped black-and-white rectangles, discs with dark centres, triangles and golden dots. A dark bird sits on a branch to the right, and a pale figure with a lilac pattern stands out to the left of the trunk. A busy band of small flowers in crimson, yellow and purple runs along the bottom, and it is the one warm accent in an otherwise cold picture. Beadwork covers the tree, the ornaments, the bird and that lower band, while the blue background with its white streaks stays as print on the canvas.
