Description

“Wreath of shells” is a seaside wreath of shells, corals and a starfish arranged in a circle against turquoise boards. The word Welcome is spelled out in white beads below, so the picture reads as a greeting at the entrance to a home.

What the picture shows

The wreath gathers shells large and small: a striped fan shell and a pearly nautilus sit at the top, spiral horns curl in on both sides, and a long ridged conch closes the bottom. Between them spread coral branches in lilac, crimson, mint and orange, with an orange starfish resting on the left. The background is weathered wooden planking in a cool turquoise tone with faint printed silhouettes of shells and coral, and those stay as print on the canvas. The beadwork covers the wreath itself and the lettering, so the circle rises above the boards in relief, and pearl and clear beads give the same wet play of light as real shells.
