Description

“Mother`s tenderness” shows a doe and her fawn nestled together with their eyes closed. Both figures are laid out in continuous curls, as if drawn with one unbroken line.

What the picture shows

The mother's head is raised, her long pointed ears swept back, while the fawn tucks itself under her neck. Their coats are rendered in dense spirals and waves of golden, honey, cream and pearl beads — the pale curls read even from a distance. A rounded glow like a sun disc with thin rays spreads out behind the figures. The beige background is covered with a fine maze-like texture; it stays as print on the canvas, so all the beadwork gathers on the deer themselves and on the sun. The palette is deliberately spare — twelve bead colours, but over fifteen thousand beads, and the piece rests on the play of light rather than on variety of colour. The rays behind the heads spread out unevenly, and they carry the finest part of the work.
