Description

“At the samovar” is a tea still life with a copper samovar, hot tea and lemon. A warm domestic scene gathered around a laid table.

What the picture shows

A large samovar rises on the left, with a shaped crown and a tap, stitched in brown, copper and gold beads — a highlight plays across its rounded side. On the right a candle burns in a bronze holder. On the table, covered with a blue-and-white checked cloth, stands a red cup with white polka dots holding tea, a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint. Beside it lie lemon halves and a string of bagels, and at the far edge you can see a small bowl of red caviar and a deep plate with a spoon. The background — a blurred lilac-and-gold glow — stays as print on the canvas, so attention holds on the samovar and the tableware. The bagels are threaded on a string and heaped straight onto the cloth. The cloth itself falls from the table in folds, and the check pattern across them is laid out in beads too, row by row.
