Description

“Air step” is a large butterfly above pink blossom, caught mid-wingbeat. A delicate, watercolour-soft piece in a pastel palette.

What the picture shows

The butterfly's wings open across almost the whole canvas: the upper wing is covered in violet and lilac beads with dark veins, the lower one shades into turquoise and emerald, and a yellow-orange stripe flares near the body. Fine pale curls wind across the wings, and the antennae are long and curved. Around it are clusters of pink and white flowers stitched in small stitches, which makes them look soft and fluffy; a large pale flower with long petals shows at the bottom left. The background — a blurred watercolour of pink, blue, lilac and yellow — stays as print on the canvas, and the beaded butterfly looks genuinely raised against it. The butterfly's body is dark with thin pale segments, and the inner edge of the lower wing is outlined with a line of white beads. Small buds are scattered across the whole field of the picture.
