Description

“Aslan” is a lion built from golden curls, lying in front of the glow of a sun disc. The piece keeps to a single warm palette with almost no outside colours.

What the picture shows

The lion is shown in profile: calm, head raised, front paws stretched forward. Mane, back and tail are made up of dense spirals and curls stitched in cream, pearl, sand and gold beads — from a distance they merge into a continuous shimmer, up close they read as separate patterns. A golden sun disc with long thin rays rises behind the head. The dark brown background is covered with a fine maze-like texture resembling carved wood; it stays as print on the canvas, so all the beadwork gathers on the lion himself and on the sun. The lion's tail curves round and ends in a full tuft made of the same spirals. The sun's rays are stitched in long rows of beads reaching from the disc almost to the edges of the canvas.
