Description

“Heat of summer” is a bouquet of sunflowers and white calla lilies in a zinc watering can standing on a wooden shelf. A sunny still life gathered from the warmest things August has.

What the picture shows

Seven large sunflowers open in the centre, with dark brown hearts and dense yellow petals; between them are white callas with yellow spadices, small russet clusters and long green leaves. The watering can is stitched in silver-grey and pearl beads, with an embossed pattern on its side, a curved spout and a tall handle. The background is ochre-yellow, framed by a wide beaded border in gold and mustard shades with thin green stems growing through it. The dark wooden shelf and the soft background stay as print on the canvas, while beadwork covers the flowers, the can and the border, which gives the bouquet its depth. A few petals have fallen from the lowest sunflower and lie on the shelf beside small brown seed heads. The composition sits slightly to the right, which makes the bouquet look unstudied.
