Description

“Motley fan” is a peacock with its tail fully spread across the whole canvas. The tail opens like a fan, and pale butterflies flit between the feathers.

What the picture shows

The bird stands in profile: cobalt-blue neck and breast, a crest of three feathers, and a body that shades into emerald-green plumage. The tail is built from dozens of eyes — each with a deep blue centre, a gold ring and a green-turquoise border. An ornamental band with red and gold inlays runs down the left edge, with a narrower band on the right. Three butterflies fly above the tail: white, cream and yellow. Beadwork covers the peacock itself, the eyes on the feathers and the butterflies, while the green leafy background and part of the fine pattern stay as print, so the stitching stands out in clear relief. Each eye on the tail is stitched separately, and that is where most of the fine work goes.
