Description

“Boyfriend hand” is a generous bouquet of garden roses and lilac blossoms in a silvery openwork vase, set against a wall of old letters. Envelopes and a strand of pearls lie on the table below — a still life about correspondence kept for years.

What the picture shows

The bouquet gathers pink, cream and raspberry roses, small lilac and violet clusters and rich green leaves, with a few sprigs trailing downwards. The tall vase is carved and beaded in pearl and silver tones, so it reads almost like cut crystal. The background — ivory canvas with handwritten lines, postmarks and soft ink stains — stays as print, while beadwork covers the flowers, the vase, the envelopes and the pearl necklace, which is why they step forward against the matte base. Bottom right you can see two envelopes covered in fine handwriting and a small pink rose that has fallen beside them.
