Description

“Song of the Sea” is a decorative wave curling around a sun, resolved as one continuous ornament. The subject is not literal: it is a pattern about the sea rather than a seascape.

What the picture shows

The wave takes up most of the canvas and coils into a spiral from left to right. It is assembled from small motifs — rings, curls, pearl arcs, scaled rows — all in blue-violet, ultramarine, turquoise and steel blue with white and emerald veining. At the centre of the spiral glows a circle of warm pink-yellow, like a sun or a pearl. Above the wave the sky is laid in long undulating lines of lemon, mustard and gold. The ground between the ornaments stays partly as print, which keeps the pattern sharply outlined. Each element of the ornament is beaded separately: the rings in circles, the scaled rows in arcs, the small pearls as single beads. Because of this the surface of the wave comes out uneven and catches the light differently from different angles.
