Description

“Unicorn” shows a white unicorn rearing in a cloud of butterflies. The subject is fantasy, but handled with restraint: the background stays pale and the colour is gathered into the mane and the wings.

What the picture shows

The horse is turned in profile to the left, forelegs lifted. The body is beaded in white, pearl and silvery grey with blue shadows, and the spiralled horn is worked in gold. The mane and tail are sharply dark — black, deep violet and blue strands flying out in long springy lines. Butterflies circle around: orange with black patterning, blue-turquoise, emerald, violet, while the smaller lilac silhouettes stay as print on the canvas. The pale background is barely beaded at all, so the figure and the butterflies look suspended in the air. The body is beaded in rows that follow the muscles, while the mane and tail are laid in long single-bead lines, so the strands stay thin and mobile. The butterflies are stitched individually, each wing with its own pattern.
