Description

“Grisaille” is a bouquet of peonies painted almost without colour, in greys and whites, set inside a warm ochre frame with gilded scrolls. The piece is restrained and very graphic.

What the picture shows

Four large blooms fill the central rectangle: petals beaded in white, pearl and grey with dark shadows between them, and densely golden centres. The leaves and stems stay close to graphite — exactly the grisaille effect, where form is carried by light and shade rather than by colour. The inner field of the frame is warm and honey-ochre. Around it, across a terracotta-copper ground, spiral scrolls and round rosettes spread out in fine beads. The ground between them stays as print, and the gold on it reads like embossing. The petals are beaded in short rows that follow their shape, and it is the changing density of white and grey that builds the volume. The gilded scrolls around the frame are laid one bead at a time along the line, which keeps that line thin and even. The whole piece rests on two colours: cool grey inside and warm copper outside.
