Description

“Blue Poppies” shows Himalayan poppies of a rare blue on a green and turquoise ground. The subject is simple and clean, built on one strong colour.

What the picture shows

Two open blooms hold the centre: petals beaded from deep ultramarine and violet at the edges to pale blue and near white towards the heart, with bright yellow stamens inside. More petals show to the left and right, and below sit a large blue bud and two green buds covered in their characteristic bristles. The stem is dense and dark green with fine prickles. The background is a watercolour flow of green, emerald and blue; it stays as print on the canvas, while the flowers, stem and buds are beaded and so glow against the soft ground. The petals are stitched in rows from the edge inward, so the shift from deep ultramarine to pale blue moves in soft waves and the edges look slightly crumpled, as they do on a real poppy. The buds are covered with short green bristle-like stitches.
