Description

“Christmas bouquet” shows white hellebores in bloom right on the snow, against a winter landscape with a distant church. The subject is quiet and light, festive without any excess.

What the picture shows

The bouquet lies horizontally across the whole canvas: four large white flowers with fluffy yellow centres and smaller buds beside them. The leaves are dark green with clear veining, beaded in rows that follow the shape of each leaf. Pink rosehips and thin bare twigs touched with frost are scattered among the branches. Behind, a pale blue sky shades into a pinkish-beige horizon, and to the right the silhouette of a church with a bell tower is just visible. The snow and the sky stay as print on the canvas while the flowers, leaves and berries are beaded, so the bouquet stands clearly forward. The petals are beaded in white and silver with blue shadows near the base, so the flowers never look flat against the snow. The rosehips give the only warm accent in a cool range. The composition sits low and spreads wide, with plenty of air above the bouquet.
