Description

“Winter's pantry” is a sampler of winter motifs gathered into a grid of separate panels. Each fragment is a small subject of its own, and together they read like a page from an old herbal.

What the picture shows

The canvas is divided into rectangles of different sizes. Along the top run a band of dark green holly and a chequered panel with a shoot of white mistletoe. In the large panel on the left lie pine cones, orange fruit, evergreen branches and red berries in a basket. Below sit separate panels with mistletoe on red, holly with clusters of guelder berries, and cones against a chequerboard. Golden ornamental scrolls wind between them. The whole range holds to ochre, terracotta, green and red, and the ground between the motifs stays partly as print. The chequered inserts and borders are beaded in even rows while the berries and cones are set bead by bead, so the texture keeps changing across the canvas. Each panel has its own frame and reads as a separate miniature.
