Description

“Pearlescent glow” is a still life with branches of flowering magnolia in an antique bronze vase. The piece is restrained and slightly wistful, in the spirit of classical painting.

What the picture shows

The bouquet spreads out wide: large blooms with soft pink, cream and lilac petals that really do give off a pearly sheen, dark green leaves, and scatterings of crimson berries on slender twigs. The vase takes the form of an antique amphora with handles, beaded in golden bronze and deep brown, and stands on a stone sill. A few flowers lie apart on the stone, to the left and right of the vase. The blurred blue-grey background with a hint of a column stays as print on the canvas, so the beaded flowers are the first thing to step out of it. The branches and berries are beaded in fine single-bead lines, and the petals in short rows that follow their shape. The vase gleams thanks to the shift from near black at the foot to pale gold on its rounded side. The bouquet is warm and the background cool, and that contrast holds the whole piece together.
