Description

“Children of the ocean” shows stylised dolphins in the manner of ethnic dot painting, diving through deep blue water. The subject is decorative, built on simple shapes and clear ornament.

What the picture shows

The main dolphin arcs across the whole canvas: an ochre-yellow body covered with dark red spirals, rings and dots, and pale, almost white fins and tail worked in rows of small beads. Behind it the silhouette of a second dolphin shows through in silvery grey. The background is saturated blue water with green bubbles and white dots; a green frond with fine leaves runs along the bottom and small pale star marks sit to the side. Beadwork covers the dolphins, the bubbles and the seaweed, while the blue background stays as print, so the figures read very clearly. The ornament on the body — concentric circles, spirals and dots of different sizes — is beaded one bead at a time, so the pattern stays readable even close up. The range is narrow: blue, ochre, dark red, green and white, with no half-tones.
