Description

“Mountain landscape” is a sunlit alpine valley with a flowering slope in the foreground. A calm, airy subject with the feel of a clear summer day high in the mountains.

What the picture shows

A rocky ridge rises at the centre: the summit in cool blue-grey tones, the lower slopes washed in warm golden light and striped with green grass. Dark firs stand to the left and right, with paths and gullies winding between them. The foreground is the richest part — a meadow of red, ochre-yellow and blue-violet flowers among dry grass. The sky is blue with dense white cloud. Beadwork covers the mountains, the forest and the flowering slope, while part of the sky and the hazy distant peaks stay as print, which is what gives the landscape its depth. The meadow flowers are small: each is made of a few beads in different shades, so the slope looks scattered rather than a solid patch. The needles on the firs are worked in short dark green rows, and the rocks in pale vertical strokes.
