Description

“Princess of the flora” is a white lily on a dark ground among coiled bands of colour. In mood it pairs with the red lily, only cooler and calmer.

What the picture shows

The flower opens across almost the whole canvas: broad petals beaded in white, silver, pale blue and lilac with greenish veining, and at the centre a green ovary with golden-orange anthers on slender stamens. Spirals spread out to the corners and edges — emerald, turquoise, gold, violet and greyish lilac ribbons, laid in rows of beads that follow the curl. The dark background between them stays as print on the canvas, and that is exactly why the white flower and the glinting spirals look as if they glow in half-light. The petals are beaded in rows along the veins and the coils in circles, so the texture of the stitching draws the movement on its own. The darkest areas between the spirals stay almost free of beads, which deepens the background further.
