Description

“Wonderful lily” is a large red lily on a dark ground, surrounded by swirls of coloured spirals. The subject is decorative, almost like stained glass, with a sense of movement across the whole canvas.

What the picture shows

The flower fills nearly the entire field: six curved petals running from deep garnet to fiery orange near the heart, and long stamens with greenish-gold anthers. Ribbon-like spirals coil around it — emerald, turquoise, violet, magenta, ochre — each stitched in rows of beads that follow the curve of the line. The dark brown-black background between the coils stays as print on the canvas, so the beaded areas read as bright ribbons over a deep base and the flower looks lit from within. The petals are stitched in rows along the veins, so light flows over them smoothly, while the spirals are beaded in circles — the texture itself draws the movement. The outermost coils are cut off by the edge of the canvas and seem to carry on beyond the picture.
