Main Bead Embroidery Kit Fire-maned lion
Description
“Fire-maned lion” is a profile portrait of a lion whose mane unfolds into a wave of fire. The piece works on the contrast between the calm, almost thoughtful face and the burst of colour around it.
What the picture shows
The head faces left, the gaze steady and quiet. The mane is built from long strands of orange, coral, crimson, amber and deep brown, with turquoise and blue locks cutting through to cool the heat down. Ornamental patterns run along the strands: paisley drops, zigzags, chains of dots, as if the mane had been painted with henna. Beadwork covers the head and mane only, while the white background with its watercolour washes and paint splatters stays as print on the canvas, so the lion steps forward as if out of mist. The rows of beads run along the strands, so the direction of the stitching repeats the movement of the hair — that is what gives the sense of flame rising upward. Pale turquoise and pink splashes of paint stay along the edges of the canvas.
