Description

“Red fox” is a portrait of a fox in a boho headdress of feathers and a dreamcatcher on a pastel ground. The piece is decorative and calm at once: the animal looks aside, not at the viewer.

What the picture shows

The head is shown in profile, with sharp pointed ears and one attentive dark eye. The fur is painted in two ranges at the same time: red and orange across the brow, ears and neck, and cool blue and steel in the shadow, with white and pale blue strands falling onto the chest in long tongues. A band on the head carries a round dreamcatcher in a terracotta ring, and a fan of long feathers spreads back from it — blue, deep navy, russet and near black, each with fine white veins. The background is watercolour-soft and blurred, in pale green, yellow, pink and light blue patches. Beads cover the fox, the feathers and the amulet, while the soft background stays as print on the artist canvas. Warm and cool are split almost evenly here, and the whole picture rests on that balance.
