Description

“Faithful friend” is a portrait of a long-eared dog painted in clean colours in a pop-art manner. The animal looks slightly up and to the side, and the whole title lives in that gaze.

What the picture shows

The head fills the entire square of the canvas. The long coat is broken into coloured strands: pink and red across the muzzle, yellow and green on the cheeks, blue and violet in the ears that fall in waves. The eyes are different colours — one blue, one green, both with a firm black rim. The nose is large and cherry-toned with a pink sheen, and below it a pale beard is worked in white and yellow strokes. The background is flat black with no detail, so every colour looks brighter still. Beads cover the whole head and coat, while the black ground stays as print on the artist canvas, keeping the silhouette sharply separated. The coat is laid in long strokes that follow the shape of the head and ears.
