Description

“In the colours of autumn” shows the Eiffel Tower among a scatter of coloured strokes, painted as if with a palette knife. The piece is energetic and assembled from clean patches of colour.

What the picture shows

The tower fills the full height of the canvas: its lattice and arches are worked in ochre, terracotta and brown, and warm yellow light flares at the base. To the right and above, the crown of a tree is given in dense pink, crimson and red strokes that partly cover the structure. A tall street lamp with a dark post stands on the left. The sky breaks into blue, azure and turquoise, and the pavement below gathers yellow, pink and green patches. Every stroke reads separately, so the beads sit in groups by colour zone: the tower, the tree, the lamp and the brightest patches of the background are stitched, while the rest of the painted surface stays as print. The rhythm of the piece rests on the contrast between the cool sky and the hot tower. There is little architectural detail here; colour and the movement of the stroke carry the work.
