Description

“Lotuses” shows pink lotus flowers above round leaves in a warm, shimmering pond. The piece is contemplative, with a soft painterly background and crisp blooms in front.

What the picture shows

About a dozen flowers are spread across the canvas at different stages: tight buds, half-open cups and fully spread lotuses with yellow centres. The petals are light pink, deeper at the base and almost white along the edge. Large round leaves lie in waves, from fresh grass green to dark emerald, with a few raised on tall stems. The background is laid in broad strokes: the green of the water on the left moves into warm ochre and orange patches on the right, as if evening light were falling on the surface. Beads cover the flowers, leaves and stems, while the shifting background stays as print on the artist canvas, so the lotuses come forward and look even more rounded. The blooms sit in several tiers, which makes the pond feel deep and the composition roomy.
