Description

“Golden umbrellas” is a summer meadow in a narrow vertical format, where large orange blooms with dark centres sit beside clouds of pale blue cornflowers. The piece is loud in colour and full of sun.

What the picture shows

Coneflowers are scattered along the whole height of the canvas: their petals run orange, from near red at the base to gold at the tips, and the centres are deep brown and raised. Between them rise light blue and deeper blue cornflowers with fringed petals, small white blooms and long green stems. Lilac clover heads close the composition at the bottom. The background is a golden yellow field laid in broad strokes with pale flashes, as if the sun were coming through the grass. Beads cover the flowers, their centres and the leaves, while the background stays as print, so the blooms come forward and the meadow reads in layers. The flowers are placed so the eye travels upward, from the clover to the tallest heads. Orange and blue work here as a complementary pair, which is why the meadow sounds so bright.
