Description

“Chamomile etude-1” is a narrow vertical panel of summer meadow: white daisies, cornflowers and grass spikes on a bright blue ground. The piece is light throughout, with almost no dark areas.

What the picture shows

The composition builds from the bottom up: pink-lilac clover and small blue flowers below, then large daisies with white petals and orange-yellow centres, and above them tall spikes and slender stems carrying tiny cornflowers. Stems and narrow leaves are given in rich emerald and grass green. The background is clean sky blue with white flashes, which makes the group read like a meadow seen from below against the sky. The beads sit on the flowers, spikes and leaves as separate stitches, so the petals come out rounded and lifted slightly off the canvas, while the blue background stays as print and works as air around the flowers. The upper part is deliberately sparse, which lets the eye rest on clear blue.
