Description

“Zebras” shows an adult zebra and a foal against a glowing orange African sunset. It is a companion piece to “Giraffes”: the same narrow vertical and the same warm palette.

What the picture shows

The two animals stand side by side with their heads turned in different directions, so you see the foal in clear profile on the left and the adult almost face-on at the right. The black and white striping is drawn out in detail: broad and even along the neck, finer across the muzzle, with the upright manes worked as short brushes. The background is a blazing sky in yellow, orange and terracotta with the disc of the sun, and a band of distant hills runs along the bottom. An ethnic African border of broken lines and squares frames the picture. The whole palette is built from eight bead colours, from white and grey through to black and ochre. Beads cover the zebras and the border; the sky stays mostly as print. The foal presses close to the adult, so the two read as a single shape.
