Description

“Giraffes” is a portrait of an adult giraffe and a calf against a warm African sunset. The narrow vertical canvas and the calm poses keep the piece quiet and gentle.

What the picture shows

The adult stands in the upper half with its head turned to the side: tall ears, small horns, long lashes and the familiar red-gold pattern of irregular patches. Lower and closer to the viewer is a young giraffe with softer features and a short mane. The background is painted in the pink, lilac and golden tones of an early sky, and a small inset at the bottom right shows a stretch of savanna with an acacia silhouetted against the sun. An ethnic African border of squares and broken lines in ochre and brown frames the canvas. The palette holds to eight shades, from near white to dark brown. Beads cover both animals and the border, while the sky stays as print. The calf keeps close to the adult, and the pair reads as a quiet family scene.
