Description

“Holliday under the windows” shows a decorated Christmas tree standing in a snowy lane of an old town, with the warm windows of the houses glowing all around.

What the picture shows

The tree fills the centre of the square canvas: dense dark green needles hung with baubles in pink, pale blue, gold and turquoise, beaded garlands and lit candles with live flames. Behind it stand old houses with tall snow-covered roofs, a street lamp and a deep perspective running away down the lane. The sky is lilac-violet, snow drifts through the air, and a soft white cover with blue shadows lies on the ground. The palette here is wide — twenty-eight bead colours — and that is what gives the tree its depth. Beadwork covers the tree, the ornaments, the snow and the lit windows, while the blurred houses in the distance stay as print, so the lane looks misty and quiet. The candles on the branches burn with real yellow flames, and the garlands hang in light arcs.
