Description

“On all sails” shows a sailing ship running at full speed over a turquoise swell, its sails woven from patches of many colours.

What the picture shows

The ship is turned towards the viewer with its three masts; the sails are taut with wind and pieced together from fragments in every shade — gold, blue, orange, pink and turquoise, some of them finely patterned. The hull is dark with warm ochre sides and thin rigging. The sea below is a saturated blue-turquoise with wave crests and white spray, and the sky above carries the warm tones of sunrise — yellow clouds, pink and lilac shifts. Beadwork covers the sails, the masts, the hull and the waves, while the sky and clouds are largely left as print on the artist canvas, so the ship separates clearly from the background and reads in relief. The ship sits slightly left of centre, and the tilt of the masts makes it look as if it is cutting the wave right now. The small white crests on the water are stitched bead by bead.
