Description

“Morpheus Flowers” shows five red poppies against a geometric background: living flowers laid over cubist planes in cool pastel colours.

What the picture shows

The poppies are spread over the full height of the canvas: three large open blooms at the centre, two more above, and long buds swaying between them on thin green stems. The petals are stitched in several shades of red, from bright scarlet to deep cherry, and the centres are dark, almost black. The leaves are deeply cut with long teeth, in a lush green. The background is assembled from rectangles, circles and wavy bands in mint, lilac, pale blue and cream, with small accents throughout — red squares, white dots, fine lines. Beadwork covers the poppies, the stems, the leaves and part of the geometric detail, while the rest of the background stays as print on the artist canvas. The flowers stand out sharply against the geometry behind them, and that contrast between the living and the drafted is the main device of the piece, and it is what holds the composition together.
