Description

“Lilac still life” shows a generous armful of lilac in a tall glass vase, with a pale lacy butterfly resting against it.

What the picture shows

The panicles are built from tiny four-petalled florets, from deep violet and lilac through pink to almost white, and they fill the entire upper half of the canvas. Large, richly green leaves with clear veining lie among them, and a few sprigs hang down. The vase is clear, amphora-shaped, on a golden foot, and the stems show through the glass in the water. The butterfly is stitched in mother-of-pearl beads, and another sprig of white lilac appears at the lower right. The background is watercolour in yellow, pink and green washes and stays as print on the artist canvas, while beadwork covers the flowers, the leaves, the vase and the butterfly, so the bouquet stands clearly above the matte ground. The bouquet is built as a pyramid: widest at the top and tapering gradually down to the slender foot of the vase, so the silhouette stays light and balanced.
