Description

“Rush sled” shows two teddy bears racing downhill in a red sleigh, a cloud of snow dust rising behind them.

What the picture shows

The bear in front wears a black hat and a green scarf; he holds the reins and leans forward into the wind. A second, smaller bear peeks out behind him, pressed against his back. The sleigh is red with yellow runners and a small black lantern on the side, and a lilac and violet blanket with a fringe is thrown over it. Winter surrounds them: snow-laden firs, frosted bushes, a blue sky with a pale moon and white spray thrown up by the runners. Beadwork covers the bears, the sleigh, the blanket and the swirl of snow, while the distant trees and sky stay as print on the canvas — which is what makes the foreground read as moving. A swirl of snow rises on the left in one solid white arc and frames the whole scene, while thin runner tracks on the slope show where the sleigh has just come from.
