Description

“A stranger” is a portrait of a fair-haired young woman in a Venetian mask: the face is left open, while everything around it — lace, flowers and butterflies — is worked in beads.

What the picture shows

She looks straight at the viewer, with abundant wavy hair the colour of ripe wheat and a calm, faintly enigmatic expression. A gold and black mask with openwork wings and a drop pendant sits against her right temple, while pearly beaded flowers glow in her hair on the left. White lace covers her neck and shoulders, laid out in fine transparent beads, with a small pendant at the centre. Dark butterflies with a bronze sheen scatter across the canvas, and a yellow tulip appears in the lower corner. The face and hair stay as print, keeping their painterly softness, while beadwork takes on the mask, the lace, the flowers and the butterflies — and that is where the shine comes from. The palette is warm and balanced: the gold of the hair, the bronze of the butterflies and the white of the lace all rest on a greenish olive ground.
