Description

“Night rendezvous” shows two cats sitting side by side on a swing under a small lantern, with the wide circle of a winter moon glowing behind them.

What the picture shows

The cats are black silhouettes with raised ears and tails, perched on a board hung by ropes from the branch of an old tree. A little lantern burns directly above them — the only warm yellow note in the whole piece. Behind opens a pale disc laid out in concentric rings of white, blue and grey beads, as if moonlight were spreading in waves. Bare black trees stand on either side, a snowy slope shows below, and the deep blue sky is scattered with white flakes. The palette is deliberately short — eight colours. Beadwork covers the disc of light, the trees, the cats and the snow on the slope, while the far trees and sky stay as print on the artist canvas. The branch holding the swing is thick and curved, two ropes drop from it, and the whole scene reads as a crisp silhouette against the light.
