Description

“Bast” shows an Egyptian cat seated in profile against a golden solar disc. The whole figure is laid out in ornament: spirals, curls and fine patterning instead of fur.

What the picture shows

The cat sits upright with its head raised and its ears sharp, and the tail curls along the paws in one large spiral. The body is filled with white, pearl and gold beads: thin parallel lines run across the chest and legs, while the haunch and tail carry big circular scrolls that look like chased metal. A radiating rosette the colour of ripe wheat opens behind the head, ringed by a pale halo, and the background spreads out from the centre in warm brown rays. Beadwork covers the cat and the solar circle, while the fine rays behind stay as print on the artist canvas, so the figure reads as a pale relief on a matte surface.
