Description

“On the coast” is a seaside still life set by a window: a bouquet of white blooms and lilac spikes in a woven basket, with sand dunes, calm sea and gulls visible beyond the wooden frames.

What the picture shows

The bouquet is built from large cream flowers with golden centres, small lilac and violet spikes and lush green leaves. The basket planter is woven from brown willow and wrapped with a pale ribbon, and the sill beside it holds treasures from the shore: pink scallop shells, a rust-coloured starfish, a big cream conch and a sprig of pink coral. The wide cross-barred window opens onto dunes with dry grass and a band of blue water. Beadwork covers the flowers, the basket, the shells and the frame itself, so they stand proud of the surface. The distant landscape with sky, sea and gulls stays as print on the artist canvas, which keeps the depth of the scene while the foreground glows against the matte background.
