Description

“Sparks over the lake” shows two large dragonflies above the water in morning mist, worked in emerald, turquoise and pink beads. A picture about the moment light catches on a wing.

What the picture shows

The dragonflies sit on a diagonal: one on the left with dark green wings spread wide, the other on the right with longer wings that shade into pink and crimson. The wings are built from bands and veins of emerald, turquoise, white and lilac, with small flower-like dots scattered inside them. The bodies are long and dark green with gold segments, and the eyes are made from single large beads. At the upper right a mass of green and orange strokes suggests the top of a tree, while below, white beads curl into spirals of mist over the water. The green-grey marbled background stays as print on the canvas — against it the beaded dragonflies look almost transparent, as though genuinely hanging in the air. The wings are worked in long rows that follow the veins, so the beads all lie one way and catch the light together. The twenty colours go mostly into the green and turquoise range, with pink appearing only at the wingtips.
