Description

“Hide and Seek” shows a woman's face peering out from behind a scatter of small blue flowers, with one raised hand covered in a white lace pattern. A restrained, graphic piece on just nine bead colours.

What the picture shows

The whole surface is dark brown, almost black, and hundreds of small blossoms are scattered over it — blue, lilac, white and violet, each with a yellow or pale centre. They gather into two large clouds: one reaching up on the left, the other falling diagonally towards the bottom. The woman's face appears behind the flowers at the upper right: it is worked in cool blue beads, the eyes closed, the lips darker. Her hand is raised towards the blossoms, and the palm is covered with a dense white pattern like lace or henna painting. Beads cover the flowers, the face and the hand, while the dark background stays as print on the canvas — that contrast is what makes the flowers luminous and holds the whole picture on two accents. Each blossom takes only five or six beads, so the work advances through small repeating elements and divides easily into short sittings.
