Description

“Money Tree” shows a tree that grows coins instead of leaves, with roots below spreading into bright floral ornament. A picture that wishes prosperity, under a recognisable blue and yellow sky.

What the picture shows

The upper part of the canvas is sky: deep blue at the top giving way to a broad yellow band above the horizon. The trunk is slim and dark, with a branching crown; more than a dozen coins of different sizes hang from the branches — silver, copper and gold, with profiles, crests and lettering around their rims. The lower half is dark brown earth, where the roots turn into exuberant ornament of scrolls, leaves, flowers and droplets in turquoise, orange, pink and green. Beads cover the coins, the branches and the whole underground pattern, while the sky and the texture of the soil stay as print, so the ornament reads as raised and glows against the dark ground. Twenty-six colours give those roots a strikingly varied palette. The coins are worked in concentric rings, from a light rim to a darker centre, so each one reads as struck metal. The branches and crown, by contrast, are stitched as thin single-bead lines.
