Description

“Feather Sunbird” shows a fairy-tale bird whose long tail falls the whole length of a narrow panel, against a patterned violet ground. A decorative piece with a distinctly eastern motif.

What the picture shows

The bird is turned in profile: it has a crest of fine feathers, a turquoise-green neck and a wing worked in pink, yellow and gold. The tail splits into long ribbon feathers, each ending in an eye with a coloured core; they hang downwards and curve slightly, filling almost two thirds of the canvas. Small gold and pink dots scatter around the head like sparks, and a dark circle behind it reads like a sun disc. The background is violet with a faint damask pattern, and a narrow border with corner scrolls runs along the edge of the panel. Beads cover the bird, the sparks and the outline of the border, while the violet pattern stays as print on the canvas — against it the bright feathers glow all the more clearly. Each eye on a feather is worked in several colours in concentric rings, from a dark core to a light rim, so the tail never looks monotonous. Twenty colours give a smooth run from cool turquoise near the neck to warm gold at the tips.
