Description

“Fly of butterfly” shows a decorative butterfly with painted wings on a violet and pink ground, among spirals, circles and small flowers. A piece in the spirit of contemporary ornamental painting.

What the picture shows

The wings are divided into segments, and each one carries its own pattern: lilac and pink fields with fine white scrolls, a dark red patch with rings, an area of small dots, stripes along the edge. The body is a row of orange beads and the antennae curl into long spirals. At the upper left burns an orange-red sun coiled like a snail shell, while at the right sits a posy of white, yellow and pink blossoms with green leaves. Concentric circles of pink, black and white spread across the lower part. The violet background with its turquoise and green washes stays mostly as print, while beads build the butterfly, the sun, the flowers and the ornamental circles — and those are what hold the composition together. The nineteen colours are unevenly distributed: most of them go into the wings, while the background rests on a few close shades of violet. The scrolls and spirals are worked as single beads along a line, so that line stays thin and lively.
