Description

“Summer water colours-2” shows a butterfly, poppies and tall cacti in a round frame that opens onto a landscape of lilac mountains. A warm piece from the same watercolour series.

What the picture shows

The ring is worked in two bands: pale blue on the inside and orange along the outer edge. Inside it are a violet-blue mountain ridge, the bend of a bright river and pink light in the sky. Four red-orange poppies with black centres stand around the ring on slender stems, while green columnar cacti with small buds rise at the top and on both sides. A large butterfly sits at the centre, its wings marbled with white, cream, grey and blue patches, its body dark and its antennae long. Beads cover the butterfly, the poppies, the cacti and the frame, while the sandy yellow background with its blurred flowers around the edges stays as print on the canvas. The poppy petals run from orange at the base to deep red along the edge, and the cacti are worked in vertical rows with small light dots standing in for spines. The butterfly's wings are the most densely covered area, and they are what pull the eye.
