Main Bead Embroidery Kit High tea
Description
“High tea” shows a kerosene lamp under a wooden eave, two clay mugs of something hot, and a blue mountain evening behind them. A quiet scene about the end of a day somewhere in the hills.
What the picture shows
The main light in the piece is the flame inside the lamp: the glass is worked in yellow, white and warm orange beads, the brass body and handle in ochre and brown. Steam rises from the mugs in white and silver, curling up towards a pine branch with cones that hangs above the lamp. A small posy of blue, white and pink wildflowers lies on the table beside them, with folded pale fabric behind. To the left the night landscape opens up: blue mountains, a soft glow behind the ridge and a starry sky. Beads cover the lamp, the mugs, the steam, the flowers and the pine needles, while the mountains, the sky and the wooden wall stay as print on the canvas — which makes the flame look brighter still. Twenty-six colours go mostly into the light: the flame and the lamp glass take the largest share of them, and that is where the transitions are finest.
