“Gold of Autumn” shows an old park at the height of leaf fall: a black wrought-iron bridge over still water, golden crowns and a path buried in leaves. A quiet picture about the end of October.

What the picture shows

The bridge stands at the centre of the composition; its openwork railings, piers and lamp posts are worked in black and dark grey beads, so they read graphically against the warm background. To the left and right the maple crowns are built from small touches of ochre, orange, red and green, mixed within the crown itself the way real trees are. Lower down the leaves scatter onto the path and onto the water, where the trunks are reflected. The depth of the park, the misty avenue and the far trees stay as print on the canvas: beads go only on the leaves, the bridge and the stones along the bank, so those are what glow while the rest holds a soft painterly haze. The palette is restrained — fourteen colours, nearly all warm. The foliage is worked not as a solid field but as separate dots in different shades, which is why the crowns never look flat. The water under the bridge is given in long horizontal rows that read as ripples.
