“Watery waste” is a quiet view of a cottage above a lake, set inside a lavish golden bead frame. Here the frame is as much a part of the subject as the landscape itself.

What the picture shows

The canvas is horizontal. A wide ornament of golden and bronze leaves, roses, lilies and scrolls winds around the perimeter — it is the most densely beaded part and holds the whole composition together. Inside it an oval view opens up: a white cottage with a red tiled roof and a porch stands right at the water's edge, a pink tree blossoms beside it, a willow leans in from the right, and blue hills rise behind. White swans glide across the lake, red flowering shrubs line the bank, and water lilies show on the surface. The background outside the frame is pale green with a faint pattern and stays as print, as do the sky and the distance inside the oval. The beadwork covers the frame, the cottage, the trees, the flowers and the swans.
