Description

“Marguerites” is an autumn still life: a jug packed with chrysanthemums and, beside it on the table, apples and a pear. The background is deliberately blurred, as though painted with a wet brush.

What the picture shows

The canvas is vertical and the bouquet spreads wide, almost reaching the edges. The chrysanthemums come in several ranges at once: terracotta and brick red in the centre, pink and lilac at the top and on the left, white and small yellow ones around the outside. Each flower is worked in small beads laid in a circle, so the petals read as little rays. Dark green and grey-green leaves and thin stems show between the blooms. A pale jug with a rounded side stands below, and beside it lie a red apple, a yellow pear, a cluster of small fruit and another apple on the right. The grey-white watercolour background and part of the tabletop stay as print on the canvas, so the beaded flowers look dense and warm.
