Description

“China peonies” shows large pink peonies with a butterfly on a watercolour background. The picture is delicate in colour and at the same time very densely beaded.

What the picture shows

The composition is vertical: the two largest blooms sit one above the other in the centre and fill almost the whole canvas. The petals are graded from deep crimson and pink to lilac, pearl and near white at the heart, so the flowers look rounded and soft. An unopened bud rests on a thin stem to the right, and above it a grey-lilac butterfly holds its wings open. Dark green leaves with visible veins and a few pale twigs spread out below and to the sides. The background is blurred, in pastel pink, turquoise and peach washes — it stays as print on the canvas, so all the attention goes to the beaded flowers standing above the matte surface.
