Description

“On the waves” is a sailing ship under golden sails on an evening sea. The subject is built on the contrast between a warm sky and the cold, almost icy wave in front.

What the picture shows

The canvas is vertical, and the ship stands in its upper half, bow turned towards the viewer. The sails are worked in amber, honey and cream beads — they glow because the sun is setting directly behind them. The hull is dark ochre-brown with rows of gun ports, and pink pennants fly from the masts. The sky runs from orange at the horizon to lilac and grey-blue above, with a headland darkening on the right. The lower third of the canvas belongs to the wave: turquoise and emerald with a high crest, and this is where the beads do their best work — clear, white and pearl beads read as foam and spray. The sky and the far horizon stay as print on the canvas.
